The Honorary Council of the Mbaracayú Reserve held its annual meeting

This Monday, the annual meeting of the Honorary Council of the Mbaracayú Reserve was held, attended by members and guests from various sectors that make up the Honorary Council based on Law 112/91. The meeting was held at the United Nations (UN) office in Asunción and addressed crucial issues that directly impact the preservation and sustainable development of the entire Mbaracayú Forest Biosphere Reserve area, including its core area that is the Mbaracayú Forest Natural Reserve.

One of the main topics discussed was the problem of illegal plantations that threaten the integrity of the reserve. Furthermore, the need for coordinated and effective actions to mitigate this challenge and preserve the region's great biodiversity was highlighted.

Another fundamental aspect that the agenda took up was the socioeconomic development in the area and its coordination with local producers. Strategies were explored to drive economic growth that is compatible with environmental conservation, actively engaging communities and promoting sustainable practices.

“This space is key to seeing the magnitude of the current challenges and charting a new path together that allows us to find solutions to continue protecting the Mbaracayú Reserve,” said Speranza, who chaired the session.

The Honorary Council of the Mbaracayú Reserve reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and the well-being of local communities, establishing a proactive agenda to face present and future challenges in this region of invaluable ecological and cultural importance.

The meeting was attended by Mario Samaja representing the UN, Emiliano Mrejyvagi and Margarita Mrejyvagi, representing the Aché Kuetuvy community, Daniel Jacquet for the Mbaracayú Foundation, Yan Speranza for the Moisés Bertoni Foundation (FMB), Nilde Rivas of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Benjamin Hawksbee for Guayakí Yerba Mate; and Hugo Baptista of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD).
