Launch of the Circular Packaging Economy Roadmap

This Wednesday, February 21, the official launch of the Circular Packaging Economy Roadmap was held in the auditorium of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC). This document represents an important public policy instrument, the result of public-private consensus, aimed at establishing goals and coordinating joint actions that promote the development of a more circular post-consumer packaging industry, within the framework of a society committed to responsible consumption.

The need to develop this roadmap arises from the work of the public policy table of the Circular Economy Promotion Group (GIEC), coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES). and the Moisés Bertoni Foundation (FMB), with the support of the Innovation Laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Lab).

The process of developing this instrument was widely participatory, with the collaboration of various key actors from both the public and private sectors, civil society organizations, academia and international organizations. Through 3 workshops and a total of 13 meetings, a document was consolidated that reflects the visions and contributions of all those involved in promoting the circular economy in the country.

Paraguay, with a post-consumer packaging recycling rate of 43% and 53% of packaging containing recycled material locally, shows significant potential in this area. However, there are still challenges to overcome, such as the importation of waste and the need to improve the formalization and working conditions of grassroots recyclers.

Among the proposed measures, the optimization of the recycling chain, the design of more recyclable packaging and the promotion of reuse stand out. These actions will not only contribute to reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but will also generate economic opportunities, facilitate access to new markets and improve waste management.

This document is available for download on the Foundation's website, in the section publications.
