HISTORY

In 1987, professionals from the Conservation Data Center (CDC) and the National Museum of Natural History of Paraguay (MNHNP), both then departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), together with foreign scientists, the organization The The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a conservation organization in the United States of America, and the Missouri Botanical Garden (USA), completed a series of field studies in the forest they named “Mbaracayú” (in honor of the mountain range). In the aforementioned study, they determined the biological importance of the area and the need to convert the property into a protected wilderness area. A document was prepared called “Technical Justification for the incorporation of 60.000 hectares of land in the Department of Canindeyú, to the System of Managed Areas of Paraguay” (unpublished). That same year, during the TNC Annual Meeting in Snowbird, Utah, the then director of the Conservation Data Center, Eng. Raul Gauto, presented to the TNC the idea of the Mbaracayú Reserve as an opportunity for the conservation of natural resources in Paraguay. The Latin American Division of TNC decided to develop actions, at the request of the Board of Governors, for the conservation of that area, and they appointed Mr. Alan Randall to work with Raul Gauto on that task. The following year, in January 1988, the Constitution of the Moisés Bertoni Foundation for Nature Conservation (FMB) was signed, created with the objective of contributing to the conservation and sustainable development of the country's natural resources, including where Mbaracayú and other important ecosystems and reserves were located. The first assembly of the organization elected Raul Gauto to occupy the position of executive director of the FMB, who served as such until 1998, when Engineer Nancy Cardozo took over, who served until 2006, and from then on, Lic. Yan Speranza is the institutional director.
